Frozen Royalty                                  August 2014

August has arrived with icy blasts from the South    and regular sprinklings of snow on the Port Hills that  look very much like someone has dusted them with  icing sugar. It's fitting that the freezing temperatures  have coincided with the 'Frozen' phenomenon. This  month I have been lucky enough to have been  invited to three birthday parties with the new Disney  classic as the theme.
I'm a fan of Elsa and Ana. They take matters into  their own hands, stand up for themselves and each  other, and carry on through adversity with good  intentions. As far as princess heroines go, they're  good value!

I have tried a variety of face painting designs for  'Frozen' recently, but this one is my favourite so far.  Simple and quick with a one-stroke on the eyelids.    No doubt I will be painting a lot more of these in the  near future for the next series of Elsa's and Ana's!

The winter school holidays are here with lashings of cold wind and indoor afternoons. Commonly a quieter time for children's entertainers, It's been a great opportunity to re-stock my face painting kit and, with willing models off school, to re-work some old designs! People often ask me when I'm working where I get my designs and ideas from. There is no singular answer for that, but the great thing about the face painting community in Canterbury is the collaboration and sharing of ideas and designs that goes on. This is a bird design that I originally learnt whilst working next to Pip from Dotty Pop. I had to learn it in a hurry because she had it up on her board, so I kept getting requests for it! It was originally a bird of paradise design, but I have modified it slightly to form a simple Peacock.

Tropical Flower Eye Design, face painted by Anita Lyn, New Zealand.

This month I felt very lucky to be able to attend the Anita Lyn Workshop in Christchurch. The very talented Anita works in the North Island and it was her first trip down south in a teaching capacity. She is well known for her multitude of cool butterfly and floral designs and her zany sense of humour! A group of fellow Cantabrian artists and myself were able to get a heap of new ideas and techniques down while we practiced on each other and ourselves. New shading, detailing and one stroke ideas that you will see emerging in Colour-me-in designs in the months to come!
             Thanks Anita, a great workshop.
